TOPS Program Welcomes Next Generation of Squash Players, Eyes LA 2028 Olympics

The Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympics Cell (MOC) is gearing up not only for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games 2024 but also looking ahead to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. They have recently included three promising squash players into the Development Group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Squash, which was added to the 2028 Olympics programme last year, has been gaining popularity in India due to successes in Asian and Commonwealth Games. Established players like Saurav Ghosal, Dipika Pallikal, and Joshna Chinappa are passing on their legacy to the next generation, represented by Anahat Singh, Abhay Singh, and Velavan Senthilkumar, who have now joined the TOPS Development Group.

Cyrus Poncha, the secretary general of the Squash Racquets Federation of India (SRFI), expressed delight over squash’s inclusion in TOPS, stating it will boost participation, training opportunities, and international exposure for Indian players. Anahat Singh, a 16-year-old National champion and Asian U17 champion, shared her excitement about being part of TOPS, believing it will enhance her game and inspire other youngsters to take up squash professionally.

On the men’s side, Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar, both accomplished players in their own right, are optimistic about TOPS’ support in their journey towards international success. They believe that squash’s inclusion in the Olympics will generate more interest in the sport and lead to a stronger contingent representing India on the global stage.
