The Indian Golf Union’s renowned All-India Amateur Championships saw Subhash Tamang become the first golfer from Nepal to win.

At the storied Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Tamang, 21, defeated Rohit of India 9 to 7 to win the 122nd edition of the competition. For the first fifteen holes, Tamang, 21, and Rohit were tied for the lead. After 18 holes, Tamang then pulled away to lead 3-up. With seven holes remaining in the second session, Tamang was nine holes ahead and went on to win the match.

The reserved Tamang, who traveled to India in 2022 to train with Indian pro Tarun Sardesai at his academy outside of Bengaluru, remarked, “It is the happiest moment of my life.” Tamang’s best victory to date comes from his performances that won him starts at various international events, like the Asia Pacific Amateur Championships.

Tashi Ghale, a businessman from Nepal and the president of the Nepal Golf Association, was the one who initially saw Tamang. Ghale brought him to Gokarna Golf Club, where Tamang practised and played, and met with Deepak Acharya, the Director of Operations and a teaching professional.
