The Indian men’s hockey team secured their second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympic Games by defeating Spain 2-1 in the third position playoff match on Thursday in Paris. This victory marks a significant achievement for Indian hockey, coming just four years after their bronze medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In an emotionally charged match, India’s star goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who is widely celebrated as “The Great Indian Wall of Indian Hockey,” concluded his illustrious 18-year career with this bronze medal. As the final whistle blew, Sreejesh was visibly moved, collapsing onto the turf in relief. His teammates responded with heartfelt tributes, saluting him for his contributions. Captain Harmanpreet Singh lifted Sreejesh onto his shoulders for a celebratory lap, honoring the veteran’s remarkable career.

In the game, India showcased their resilience by coming from behind. Spain initially took the lead with a penalty stroke goal from their captain Marc Miralles in the 18th minute. However, Harmanpreet Singh scored two crucial goals for India in the 30th and 33rd minutes, securing the victory. This win brought India’s total count of men’s Olympic hockey medals to 13, including four bronze medals.

This bronze medal is a testament to India’s enduring hockey legacy, adding to their collection of eight golds, three silvers, and four bronzes.
