UP Warriorz finally claimed their first win in the Women’s Premier League 2025 with a convincing 33-run victory over Delhi Capitals in Bengaluru on Saturday. Chinelle Henry played a crucial role, delivering an explosive knock and taking a key wicket.
Warriorz Struggle Early
After winning the toss, Delhi Capitals chose to bowl first. At first, their decision seemed to pay off as UP Warriorz struggled to gain momentum. They lost their first wicket at 17, and soon after, Kiran Navgire (17) also fell, leaving the score at 38/2.
Moreover, Captain Deepti Sharma (13) and Shweta Sehrawat (11) failed to capitalize on their starts. As wickets continued to tumble, Grace Harris (2) and Uma Chetry (3) departed quickly, pushing Warriorz to a precarious 89/6. Although Tahlia McGrath contributed 24, she too fell to Jess Jonassen.
Henry’s Heroics Lift Warriorz
Just when Warriorz seemed to be in deep trouble, Chinelle Henry completely changed the game. She blasted 62 off just 23 balls, smashing two boundaries and eight sixes. Thanks to her powerful innings, Warriorz reached a competitive total of 177/9. Towards the end, Sophie Ecclestone (12) and Saima Thakor (4) chipped in with a few runs.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s bowlers put up a strong fight. Jess Jonassen stood out with 4/31, while Marizanne Kapp and Arundhati Reddy took two wickets each. Additionally, Shikha Pandey managed to pick up one.
Delhi Capitals Falter in the Chase
In response, Delhi Capitals got off to a shaky start. Their captain, Meg Lanning, fell early for just 5. Soon after, Shafali Verma managed 24 before Kranti Goud dismissed her.
Although Jemimah Rodrigues played a brilliant knock of 56 off 35 balls, wickets kept falling at the other end. Even though Niki Prasad (18) and Shikha Pandey (15*) tried to hold on, the Warriorz bowlers proved too strong. As a result, Delhi Capitals were bowled out for 144.
Warriorz Bowlers Dominate
Notably, Kranti Goud, playing only her third WPL match, delivered a stunning spell, taking 4/25. At the same time, Grace Harris recorded her first hat-trick of the season, finishing with 4/15. Furthermore, Chinelle Henry dismissed Marizanne Kapp, while Deepti Sharma also chipped in with a wicket.
Henry Earns Player of the Match Honors
Ultimately, Chinelle Henry’s match-winning performance earned her the Player of the Match award. With this victory, UP Warriorz gained much-needed momentum. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals will now look to bounce back in their next match.
