UP Warriorz defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a thrilling Super Over clash in the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025 on Monday. Notably, this was the first time a match in the tournament was decided by a Super Over.
Super Over Drama Unfolds
The main match ended in a tie. Consequently, Grace Harris and Chinelle Henry batted first for UP Warriorz in the Super Over. Despite conceding 40 runs earlier, RCB captain Smriti Mandhana handed the ball to Kim Garth. Impressively, Garth responded well by restricting Harris and Henry.
She gave away only two runs in the first two balls. Then, she forced Henry into a risky shot, resulting in a thick edge caught by Richa Ghosh. Sophie Ecclestone joined Harris but could only push the total to eight runs.
In response, Mandhana and Ghosh came out to chase nine runs. However, Ecclestone defended the score brilliantly, conceding just three runs in five balls. RCB needed a six off the final ball. Mandhana attempted but failed to clear the boundary, sealing RCB’s defeat.
Action-Packed Match Before the Super Over
Before the Super Over, the match had already been intense. RCB posted 180/6, thanks to Ellyse Perry’s unbeaten 90 off 56 balls. UP Warriorz started aggressively. Kiran Navgire smashed 24 runs off 12 balls before Renuka Thakur dismissed her. Shortly after, Thakur struck again, removing Vrinda Dinesh cheaply.
RCB debutant Sneh Rana made an immediate impact by stumping Tahlia McGrath, leaving UP Warriorz at 57/3 after the powerplay. At this point, Captain Deepti Sharma fought back. She hit a four and a six off Sneh in the eighth over. However, Sneh had the last laugh, forcing Deepti (25 off 13) to edge the ball to Ghosh.
Mid-Innings Collapse and Ecclestone’s Heroics
Grace Harris and Shweta Sehrawat tried to stabilize the innings. In response, Mandhana brought back Garth, who dismissed Harris in the 11th over. As a result, UP Warriorz slumped to 93/5.
Meanwhile, Uma Chetry and Chinelle Henry struggled to score. Then, Sophie Ecclestone took charge, attacking RCB’s bowlers. She reduced the target to 18 runs in the final over.
Last-Over Drama
Ecclestone smashed Renuka Thakur for two sixes and a boundary. Consequently, UP Warriorz needed just two runs from two balls. She took a single, leaving one run required off the final ball.
Kranti Goud was on strike and needed to score one run. Renuka bowled wide outside off, and Kranti missed. However, Ecclestone ran for a bye. Richa Ghosh reacted quickly, collecting the ball and running her out, forcing a Super Over.
UP Warriorz Secure Victory
Ultimately, UP Warriorz held their nerve and won the match. Without a doubt, it was one of the most intense battles in Women’s Premier League history.
