Mumbai Indians delivered a commanding performance at Kotambi Stadium on Tuesday, securing a five-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025. With this win, MI extended their unbeaten record against the Giants to five matches, all while successfully chasing targets.
Early Setbacks, but Sciver-Brunt Leads the Charge
While chasing a modest target of 121, MI faced early trouble as openers Hayley Matthews (17) and Yastika Bhatia (8) fell cheaply. Soon after, captain Harmanpreet Kaur (4) also departed, putting MI under pressure. However, Nat Sciver-Brunt stepped up at number three and changed the game’s momentum.
She played a blistering knock, scoring 57 off 39 balls. Moreover, her crucial 45-run stand with Amelia Kerr helped stabilize the innings. Although Priya Mishra dismissed Sciver-Brunt, Sajeevan Sajana and G Kamalini ensured MI crossed the finish line with more than three overs to spare.
Gujarat Giants Struggle to Build Partnerships
Earlier, MI won the toss and opted to bowl. Right from the start, Gujarat Giants struggled to build partnerships. Their top-order batters, including Beth Mooney (1), Laura Wolvaardt (4), and Dayalan Hemalatha (9), were back in the pavilion before the fourth over.
As wickets kept falling, the Giants found it difficult to recover. The highest partnership of their innings was a 24-run stand between Harleen Deol and Tanuja Kanwar for the eighth wicket. Deol top-scored with 32 off 31 balls, while Kashvee Gautam contributed a quick 20 off 15 deliveries, including two fours and a six.
MI’s Bowlers Take Full Control
Mumbai Indians’ bowlers dominated the game from start to finish. While debutant Parunika Sisodia remained wicketless, the rest of the attack made crucial breakthroughs.
Notably, the spin duo of Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr wreaked havoc on the Giants’ batting order. Matthews delivered a stellar spell, taking 3/16 in four overs, while Kerr provided excellent support with 2/22.
In the end, MI’s disciplined bowling and Sciver-Brunt’s fiery knock ensured their first victory of the WPL season.
