Delhi Capitals secured a commanding six-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants in the TATA Women’s Premier League 2025. The match took place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday. As a result, DC moved to the top of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 points table.
Bowlers Dominate as Gujarat Giants Struggle
Right from the start, Delhi Capitals’ bowlers took control of the game. After winning the toss, DC opted to field first. Gujarat Giants, however, failed to build any momentum. Their openers, Beth Mooney (10) and Harleen Deol (5), struggled to make an impact.
Soon after, Marizanne Kapp struck the first blow. She delivered a sharp outswinger, forcing Harleen to edge the ball to wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce. Just a few balls later, debutant Phoebe Litchfield departed for a three-ball duck, trapped in front of the stumps.
As the pressure mounted, Shikha Pandey took over. On the very first ball of the fifth over, she dismissed Mooney. Immediately after, she sent Kashvee Gautam back for a golden duck. Consequently, Gujarat Giants collapsed to 31/4 by the end of the powerplay.
Although Deandra Dottin tried to stabilize the innings with 26 off 24 balls, Annabel Sutherland quickly dismissed her. Meanwhile, Bharti Fulmali provided some resistance towards the end. Her unbeaten 40 from 29 balls helped Gujarat Giants reach 127/9, but the total still seemed below par.
Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen Take Charge
In response, Delhi Capitals began their chase cautiously. However, they suffered an early setback when skipper Meg Lanning fell cheaply for just 3 off 13 balls.
Despite the slow start, Shafali Verma and Jess Jonassen gradually shifted gears. In the final over of the powerplay, they took on Ashleigh Gardner, scoring 13 runs and pushing DC to 46/1.
Then, Shafali unleashed her attacking intent. She targeted Priya Mishra, launching two massive sixes and taking the partnership past the 50-run mark. In the following overs, she continued her aggressive approach, smashing another six and a four off Gardner.
Nevertheless, Gardner had the last laugh. She trapped Shafali in front of the stumps, bringing an end to her explosive innings of 44 off 27 balls. Despite this, the 74-run partnership had already put DC in a strong position.
Jonassen Anchors the Chase to Victory
After Shafali’s dismissal, Jonassen ensured DC remained in control. She reached her maiden WPL fifty with a stylish cover drive off Tanuja Kanwar.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Giants attempted a late comeback by dismissing Jemimah Rodrigues and Annabel Sutherland in quick succession, reducing DC to 115/4. Even so, the match was already slipping away from their grasp.
Finally, Marizanne Kapp sealed the victory with a confident shot. As a result, Delhi Capitals completed the chase with several overs to spare, securing a well-deserved win.
