Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Saturday honored chess Grandmaster Tania Sachdev, a key member of the Indian team that secured gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. The felicitation ceremony celebrated Sachdev’s accomplishments and her role in inspiring young talent, particularly in Delhi.
Taking to her X handle, Atishi wrote:
“Today, the Delhi Government felicitated @TaniaSachdev, a proud Delhiite and a key member of the Indian team that clinched Gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad 2024. She also played chess with some of our young and upcoming chess champions from Delhi Govt schools!
“When we embark on a journey in any field, we look for role models. For Delhi’s young champions, Tania is that inspiration. Today’s felicitation isn’t just about honouring her–it’s about motivating students, especially young girls, to follow in her footsteps and aim for gold.”
Highlighting the government’s dedication to nurturing sports talent, Atishi mentioned that over 2,000 students participated in chess tournaments during 2024-25, with 65 receiving specialized training at Chhatrasal Stadium. She also pointed out that schemes such as Cash Incentive and Mission Excellence have contributed Rs 98 crores since 2018 to support athletes across various disciplines.
“We look forward to Tania’s continued support in inspiring Delhi’s young talent and shaping the next generation of chess champions!” her post concluded.

Atishi further emphasized the importance of role models like Sachdev in inspiring the younger generation, particularly young girls, to pursue sports and achieve excellence. She expressed optimism about Sachdev’s ongoing involvement in mentoring and guiding Delhi’s budding chess players.
