“Should India Pull Out…”: Broadcaster’s Message To ICC Sparks Champions Trophy Controversy

The Champions Trophy 2025 remains in limbo as no final decision has been made following India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan over security concerns. Media reports have speculated about a ‘hybrid’ model, where India’s matches might be played in Dubai, but no official confirmation has been issued.

Meanwhile, a note from broadcaster Star India to the International Cricket Council (ICC) has shed light on the financial stakes if either India or Pakistan withdraws from the tournament. According to The Times of India, the broadcaster outlined the potential revenue impact tied to the participation of these two nations.

During the sale of its four-year media rights, the ICC separately sold rights for the Indian market, with Star India’s deal accounting for 90% of the ICC’s global revenue share. If India opts out of the Champions Trophy, ICC members could lose 90% of the $750 million media rights value. In contrast, Pakistan’s withdrawal would result in a loss of less than 10% of the total revenue.

Industry insiders noted, “The ICC is well within its rights to shift the tournament to any country if it benefits the property (read: Champions Trophy). This decision isn’t as complicated as it seems.”

Addressing speculation about Pakistan leveraging the Asia Cup issue, sources clarified, “This is strictly an ICC matter. The Asia Cup is under the jurisdiction of the Asian Cricket Council, with separate broadcasters and decision-making bodies.”

Despite the challenges, officials have dismissed the possibility of canceling the tournament, emphasizing efforts to reach a resolution.
