Shimla Ice Skating Rink Opens Early, Bringing Joy to Enthusiasts

Ice skating enthusiasts in Shimla are excited as the skating season started earlier this year. The Shimla Ice Skating Rink, one of Asia’s oldest open-air rinks, opened its doors ahead of schedule. Built in 1920, it remains a historical landmark. However, despite its charm, the rink faces challenges like poor infrastructure and limited government support.

Season Begins Early Due to Favorable Weather

This year, the season kicked off earlier than usual because of favorable weather conditions. Manpreet Singh, Secretary of the Shimla Ice Skating Club, expressed his excitement. “It’s a matter of great joy that we’ve been able to kickstart the season earlier than expected. Registrations are gradually increasing as schools are now closing. Our main attractions include the winter carnival and activities at the Gymkhana, scheduled from December 25 to 31.”

Winter Carnival and Future Events

Moreover, the winter carnival is the highlight of the season. It will feature fun activities and skating games. Although no national events are planned this year, Singh remains hopeful. “The ongoing dry weather gives us hope for an extended skating season this year,” he added.

Challenges in Preparing the Rink

On the other hand, Rajat Malhotra, organizing secretary of the club, discussed the challenges of preparing the rink. “The ice is layered and frozen step by step, which took time this year due to ongoing construction in the area.” However, he emphasized the rink’s significance. “This rink remains special as the oldest open-air ice skating rink in Shimla, where generations have learned skating.”

A Major Attraction for Tourists

Furthermore, Malhotra noted that the rink draws many tourists. “After December 20, when tourist numbers rise, nearly 80 per cent of visitors make it a point to visit the rink,” he explained.

Ice Hockey Trials and Khelo India Program

In addition, the rink will host ice hockey trials in January, along with the selection of national players for the Khelo India program. For many, the rink is more than just a place to skate. It’s a place for memories and growth. Young skater Aryabhatt said, “I’ve been skating since I was five. Holidays mean ice skating for us. Even after sessions end, I never feel like leaving.”

Veteran Skater Reflects on the Rink’s Legacy

Similarly, Purana Dogra, a professional skater and coach, shared her experience. “This rink has given me some of my best memories, from childhood to now. Ice hockey, being a team sport, has been one of my greatest joys,” she said.

The Need for Better Infrastructure

However, Dogra pointed out the rink’s need for improved infrastructure. “The rink lacks adequate government support. This is the only natural rink where children can stay active and learn skating,” she said. She believes a permanent rink would offer more opportunities.

Call for Government Investment

Furthermore, Dogra urged the government to invest in a full-sized, permanent rink. “The seasonal changes are shortening the skating sessions. With changing weather patterns, the season is shrinking,” she explained. She also mentioned the lack of funding for ice hockey in India.

Year-Round Practice for Future Athletes

In light of this, Dogra believes that a year-round rink would allow continuous training. “I coach children now, and I see immense potential in them. With government support, this rink could transform into a world-class facility,” she added.
