Former Supreme Court Justice L. Nageswara Rao has been appointed by the apex court to bring in amendments to the constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
The Supreme Court, hearing a petition filed by advocate Rahul Mehra, passed the order and also entrusted Rao with the responsibility of setting up the electoral college of the IOA.
In its order, the Supreme Court stated that the former Justice will make a series of recommendations regarding the amendment of the IOA constitution as well as assist the organisation in holding elections by December 15, 2022.
The two-member bench comprising Justice Chandrachud and Hima Kohli, before whom the matter was listed, also during the hearing allowed Rajeev Mehta, the secretary general of IOA, and Adille Sumariwalla, the interim president of IOA, to represent India at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Lausanne on September 27.
