Australian batter Sam Konstas recently discussed his exchange of words with India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, during the fifth and final Test at Sydney. Konstas admitted that if the incident happened again, he would keep quiet.
India’s Defeat and World Test Championship Impact
India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 1-3 after a six-wicket defeat in the fifth Test. This loss eliminated India from the race for the ICC World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June next year. Australia and South Africa have already secured spots in the final. The exchange between Konstas, Bumrah, and Virat Kohli stirred up tension in both the Indian and Australian dressing rooms.
The Incident on the Field
The exchange occurred during Australia’s first innings in the final Test. As the day ended, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja, and Konstas made a remark to Bumrah. After taking Khawaja’s wicket, Bumrah walked toward Konstas, staring him down.
Konstas Reflects on His Comments
In an interview with CODE Sports, Konstas shared the details of the exchange. He said he told Bumrah that Khawaja was not ready to face him. “I feel like I love being in the contest and trying to put my best foot forward,” Konstas explained. He added that his attempt to waste time was meant to prevent India from getting another over. “But he had the last laugh.”
Konstas’ Performance in the Series
Konstas had a solid run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring 113 runs in four innings at an average of 28.25. His strike rate was over 81, with scores of 60, 8, 23, and 22.
Bumrah’s Incredible Performance
Bumrah, on the other hand, had an exceptional series. He took 32 wickets in five matches, the most by an Indian bowler in an away series. His average was an impressive 13.06, and his best figures were 6/76. He also claimed three five-wicket hauls. Bumrah’s brilliance earned him the ‘Player of the Series’ award. Despite his extraordinary effort, India still could not secure the trophy.
