Sachin Tendulkar’s ‘Secret Diet’ And ‘Favourite Diet’: Delicious Mutton Curry With A Twist

Sachin Tendulkar described his childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar as an “all-rounder” whose lessons extended far beyond cricket. Speaking at the unveiling of Achrekar’s memorial at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Tuesday, Tendulkar reminisced about the lessons imparted by the iconic coach and emphasised how he continues to shape his career and Indian cricket. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was also present at the event.

Tendulkar on Achrekar’s Effect on Players

Sachin Tendulkar also reflects on how Achrekar sir’s teaching method strengthened the psychological aspect of the players: “Ajit [elder brother of Tendulkar] noticed that players trained by Achrekar sir were never tensed during matches. Sir’s numerous practice matches instilled that temperament,” he reminisced.

Achrekar’s entire coaching methodology was an attempt to teach discipline, respect, and resourcefulness. “He made us value things. We used to roll pitches, sprinkle water, and set up nets ourselves. This actual involvement sharpened our understanding of the game,” Tendulkar said, further adding, “He used to be like a street-smart player, teaching us things beyond the field. “

The Achrekar Legacy of Building Strong Legacy

Sachin Tendulkar has appreciated Achrekar for being ahead of his time in coaching during the 1970s and 80s. “He implemented progressive methods and emphasised respecting the cricket kit. Sir always said, ‘You are on the field because of the bat, so respect it.”

The relationship between Achrekar and his students extended beyond the playing field. Tendulkar reminisced about going to Achrekar’s home, where he and others were fed home-cooked food. “He did not say much in praise but showed love through gestures, like giving us money for vada pav after a good performance,” Tendulkar said.

Achrekar’s Unique Approach to Training

The coach’s dedication was evident in his meticulous training methods. Sachin Tendulkar shared that Achrekar used to create coded notes on players’ performances, focusing areas for improvement. “He had a Swiss knife, glue, sandpaper and even first-aid supplies—he was like a one-stop shop for all our cricketing needs.”

Achrekar was involved in character-building activities, too. “He would push us to survive 10 minutes on the pitch with strict instructions, or run extra laps when tired,” Tendulkar recalled.

Honouring a Legend

The memorial is at Gate No. 5 of Shivaji Park, and it is a tribute to the enormous contribution Achrekar had to Indian cricket. He died in 2019. He was awarded the Dronacharya Award in 1990 and the Padma Shri in 2010.

Sachin Tendulkar ended his emotional tribute by promising to pass on Achrekar’s values to the next generation of cricketers, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire. “This memorial will serve as a motivation for aspiring players, just as sir’s lessons motivated us,” he said.
