SA20 League: The South Africa League That Could Beat the IPL

2023 is another exciting year for cricket fans because there are a lot of events they can look forward to. There’s the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, and the first edition of a brand new T20 tournament, SA20.

What is the SA20 League?

SA20 is a T20 cricket tournament run by Cricket South Africa (CSA). CSA founded SA20 in 2022 through a new entity called Africa Cricket Development Limited. 50% of the shares are owned by CSA, 30% are owned by SuperSport, and the former IPL COO Sundar Raman has 20%.

Like the IPL, SA20 Teams get players through an auction instead of going through a draft. Teams are allowed to purchase 17 players each, and they have an opportunity to sign five players before the major auction.

They can get three international players, one South African, and one uncapped South African player. The auction for the ongoing inaugural season happened on September 19, 2022.

This tournament also has a double round-robin format with playoffs.

SA20 Schedule and Venues

The inaugural season of the SA20 is scheduled to run from January 10 to February 11, 2023.

Cricket fans in South Africa, the UK, and India can watch the tournament on SuperSport, Sky Sports, and Sports 18. The whole tournament is hosted by Africa in six different venues which are also the home grounds of the six teams participating this year:

12 matches have already been played so far. In total, the tournament will have 33 matches with the playoffs scheduled to start on February 8, 2023. The Final is then scheduled on February 11, 2023, at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
