India has demonstrated a great performance in the Champions Trophy 2025, winning all their matches to reach the final on March 9 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Stadium. The team has dominated the tournament under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and will now face New Zealand in a highly expected encounter. Rohit has also made history by being the first captain to take India to the final of all ICC events, i.e., the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and World Test Championship.

But with Rohit turning 37 years old, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have difficult conversations about his captaincy future. His captaincy in ODIs and Tests is under the scanner as the board is on the lookout for long-term stability before the 2027 ODI World Cup.

BCCI to Consider Rohit’s Role Depending on Champions Trophy Final Result

The future of Rohit’s captaincy will heavily rely on India’s performance in the final against New Zealand, as per a report by Times of India. Although he is still a front-runner, BCCI wants to see a clear succession map of leadership in the coming years.

A BCCI source spilled the beans:

“Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call, but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup. There have been talks with Kohli too, but there doesn’t seem to be much anxiety around him.”

Though Rohit hasn’t made retirement plans, debates on whether or not he will remain India’s ODI and Test captain after the tournament are to be expected.

Agarkar and Gambhir Already Engaged in Rohit Future Discussion

The report further mentions that head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have already spoken with the BCCI and Rohit Sharma about his future. The discussions were reportedly held after India’s underwhelming performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025.

Rohit is said to be willing to sit down and discuss a team roadmap after the Champions Trophy 2025 is over. The final call will most probably depend on India’s performance and the board’s vision for the future of the team.
