Rohit Sharma Says ‘No Place For Shami In Australia Test Series’

India’s Test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, delivered some disappointing news regarding pacer Mohammed Shami during a media briefing on Tuesday in Bengaluru. When asked about Shami’s rehabilitation status ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, Rohit indicated that Shami is unlikely to accompany the team to Australia for the upcoming five-match Border-Gavaskar Test series.

Shami has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup and has faced several setbacks in his recovery. Despite previous expectations for his return, he has encountered multiple roadblocks that have delayed his comeback.

Rohit’s Candid Assessment

Addressing reporters, Rohit expressed his reluctance to include Shami in the Australian tour even if he regains fitness. The captain emphasized that the pacer remains “undercooked” due to his prolonged absence from competitive cricket.

“To be honest, it is difficult to make a call on him for the Australia series. He had a setback and swelling in his knees, which set him back a little. He is currently at the NCA with doctors and physios. We don’t want to bring an undercooked Shami to Australia. We are keeping our fingers crossed,” Rohit stated.

Shami Responds to Rumors

In response to the speculation surrounding his fitness, Shami took to social media to clarify the situation. He refuted reports claiming he would be missing out on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, asserting that he is diligently working towards recovery.

“Why these types of baseless rumors? I’m working hard and trying my level best to recover. Neither the BCCI nor I have mentioned that I am out of the Border-Gavaskar series. I request the public to stop paying attention to such news from unofficial sources. Please stop spreading fake news, especially without my statement,” Shami posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Future Prospects Remain Open

While Rohit has indicated that Shami’s chances of playing in Australia are slim, he has not completely ruled out the fast bowler’s potential inclusion in the series. As the team prepares for its upcoming matches, all eyes will be on Shami’s recovery progress in the days to come.
