Rachin Ravindra has now become New Zealand’s top century-maker in ICC ODI tournaments. With his latest knock, he broke the record by scoring his fourth century, surpassing Kane Williamson and Nathan Astle, who each had three.
Previously, he smashed three centuries in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Now, he has added another with a superb 112 off 105 balls against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. His innings featured 12 fours and one six, making it a game-changing performance.
Excelling in Asian Conditions
Clearly, Rachin has thrived on subcontinent pitches. Although he missed New Zealand’s opening match against Pakistan, he returned just in time for the crucial clash against Bangladesh. Since this match played a key role in determining Group A standings, his presence was vital.
While chasing 237, he led New Zealand’s innings with an aggressive yet controlled approach. Consequently, he reached his fourth ODI century in just 95 balls, setting a new record for the Blackcaps in ICC ODI events. Moreover, his brilliant performance helped knock Bangladesh out of the tournament and ended Pakistan’s title defense.
Building a Crucial Partnership
At first, New Zealand struggled at 72/3. However, Rachin steadied the innings with a crucial 129-run stand alongside Tom Latham. Together, the left-handed duo kept Bangladesh’s bowlers under pressure and ensured the scoreboard kept ticking.
Furthermore, Rachin played with confidence, using a variety of shots to maintain the run flow. Unfortunately for New Zealand, Bangladesh struck back by dismissing both Rachin and Latham in quick succession.
Nevertheless, Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips remained composed. As a result, they successfully finished the chase, securing a five-wicket win with two overs to spare.
Next Challenge: India in Dubai
Looking ahead, New Zealand will face India in Dubai on March 2 in their final Group A match. With a semi-final spot already secured, they will aim to carry this winning momentum forward.
