During the second ODI against Pakistan, New Zealand’s young cricketer Rachin Ravindra suffered serious injuries when fielding. With a blow to the head, the 25-year-old tried to snag Khushdil Shah of Pakistan at backward square leg.

Khushdil tried a sweep shot off Michael Bracewell’s delivery in the 38th over of Pakistan’s innings when the event happened. Ravindra was all set to make the catch but he seems to have lost the ball under the stadium lamps and sited at backward square leg. The ball struck him square on the head, knocking him down right off.

Ravindra started bleeding without delay, causing the medical staff to hurry onto the field. For medical attention, he was guided off with a towel over his head. While Khushdil stayed at the crease, the stunning moment left the whole stadium quiet.

New Zealand clinched the victory

Though Ravindra‘s bad injury, New Zealand won the first game of the three-nation series in Lahore by an impressive 78 runs over Pakistan. The first century of Glenn Phillips and the three-wicket haul of Mitchell Santner were instrumental in the victory. Featuring seven sixes and six boundaries, Phillips provided a superb knock off only 74 balls including 106 not out. New Zealand’s strong innings enabled them to put on quite a score of 330/6 in fifty balls. Santner next bowled 3/41 to dismiss Pakistan for 252 in 47.5 overs.

Kane Williamson (58) and Daryl Mitchell (81) also helped much to give New Zealand’s innings a solid basis. Phillips teamed up later with Bracewell on a fast 54-run stand off only 47 balls. Including three sixes, Bracewell contributed a useful came from 31 off 23 deliveries. With a remarkable 84 in the last five overs and 123 runs in the last ten overs, the New Zealand’s batting charge was especially devastating in the late innings.

Phillips’ excellent showing drew high praise from New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner, who also noted how essential his innings were for a demanding total to be established.

“Glenn’s amazing knock and his cooperation with Bracewell gave us the momentum we desperately needed. At one point we were considering a range of about 280-300. Santner mentioned in the post-game presentation that the Pakistan bowlers’ delivery was outstanding and it took Glenn’s unique knock to carry us to 330.

South Africa, meanwhile, third in the tri-nations series, are acting as a warm-up for the next Champions Trophy set for February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
