Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has shared his predictions for the upcoming five-match Test series between India and Australia, which kicks off on November 22 in Perth. The series will continue in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
Ponting, Australia’s all-time leading run scorer in Tests and ODIs, anticipates a 3-1 series victory for the hosts. While he acknowledges that India could secure a win in one of the matches, he believes Australia will reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade-long wait.
“I think India will win a Test match somewhere through the five Test matches,” Ponting said during an episode of The ICC Review. “But I still think now, Australia probably look a bit more settled, a bit more experienced, and we know that they’re a very hard team to beat at home. So, I’ll stick with the 3-1,” he added.
Ponting had predicted the same 3-1 outcome for the series earlier in August and continues to support his initial forecast.
While Australia triumphed 2-0 in the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, they were defeated 1-2 in the last two series against India on home soil. Currently, Australia leads the ICC Test rankings and the WTC 2023-25 points table, with four wins out of five red-ball matches played at home.
India, meanwhile, is recovering from recent shock defeats against New Zealand, including a historic home whitewash in the three-match series. India’s hopes of qualifying for the WTC 2025 final are now in jeopardy. To secure a spot in the final at Lord’s, India must defeat Australia 4-0 or 5-0.
