Passing the Baton of Leadership: Bismah Maroof as steps down as the Captain of Pakistani Women’s Cricket Team

After a underwhelming T20 World Cup campaign in South Africa last month, Bismah Maroof announced her resignation as captain of the Pakistan Women’s team on Wednesday.

During Maroof’s tenure, Pakistan couldn’t advance past the initial stage in the recently concluded tournament. Maroof, who is also an all-rounder, captained the Pakistan side for almost six years. Still, the team suffered defeats in three out of four group matches, including a tense encounter against traditional rivals India

During Maroof’s captaincy, Pakistan secured victories in 16 out of 34 Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs) and 27 out of 62 Women’s Twenty20 Internationals (WT20Is). The veteran cricketer has participated in 124 WODIs and 132 WT20Is to date.

I consider myself lucky to have captained such an amazing and dedicated group of cricket players,” Maroof expressed in a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“It’s been quite a thrilling journey, with its share of ups and downs,” the 31-year-old remarked. “I eagerly anticipate continuing my role as a player and contributing to the team’s success.”

The PCB stated that a new captain would be chosen prior to the team’s limited-overs series against South Africa, scheduled to take place at home in September. All-rounder Nida Dar, who previously led the team in Maroof’s absence due to injury, is considered the frontrunner for the position.
