JioHotstar, the merged streaming platform from the integration of Viacom18 and Star India under JioStar, will not provide absolutely free streaming of the Indian Premier League (IPL) anymore. The streaming platform was rolled out on Friday following the merging of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The new platform JioHotstar will deliver an improved viewing experience with a library of content comprising almost 3 lakh hours, including live sporting events and entertainment for more than 50 crore users. Yet, its new hybrid subscription model will have an effect on cricket lovers all over India.
Free IPL Streaming Limited
According to a Reuters report, users will only get to view a few minutes of an IPL match for free before being asked to subscribe. Subscriptions will begin at ₹149, asking users to pay in order to watch full matches.
Since acquiring IPL streaming rights in 2023 for $3 billion, JioCinema has allowed fans to watch matches for free. However, from 2025, IPL streaming will shift to a subscription-based model.
This change follows the $8.5 billion merger of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance and Walt Disney’s media assets in India.
One of their sources revealed to Reuters, “Once a user has affinity to the platform, starts watching for free, and gets loyal. the subscription will kick in then.” They added that various users could have their subscriptions initiated at various points.
Reliance, who holds majority control in the joint venture, hasn’t commented on such developments.
