New Delhi to Host FIDE World Cup 2025, Loses Freestyle Chess

New Delhi is set to host the FIDE Chess World Cup 2025, bringing the prestigious tournament back to India after nearly 23 years. However, reports indicate that the city will lose the hosting rights for the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, which was scheduled for September 17-24.

FIDE World Cup Returns to India After 23 Years

According to an All India Chess Federation (AICF) official, New Delhi has emerged as the top contender to host the FIDE World Cup. The final confirmation is pending approval from FIDE and the Indian government. The last time India hosted the event was in 2002 in Hyderabad, where Viswanathan Anand won the title.

The tournament will feature over 200 players from across the world and will take place from October 31 to November 27 at a venue yet to be finalized. Meanwhile, the Women’s FIDE World Cup will be held separately in Batumi, Georgia, from July 5-19, 2025.

Why New Delhi?

AICF officials have stated that the Indian government prefers New Delhi as the host city for major chess events. The Chess Olympiad 2022 was an exception, being held in Chennai due to logistical challenges in the capital.

“Since it’s the World Cup, the government’s first choice is Delhi. Once a venue is decided, it remains fixed,” an AICF official told Times of India.

Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour to Move Out of India

Despite securing the FIDE World Cup, India is likely to lose the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 hosting rights. The Chess960 event, which was originally planned in New Delhi from September 17 to 24, may now be relocated due to unspecified reasons.

Looking Ahead

With India preparing to host one of the most significant chess tournaments in the world, chess enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the official confirmation. If finalized, this event will further boost India’s growing chess culture and attract top players from around the globe.
