Mumbai Selectors to Discuss Rohit Sharma’s Ranji Trophy Availability Amid Ongoing Uncertainty

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has not yet verified his involvement in Mumbai’s forthcoming Ranji Trophy clash with Jammu and Kashmir. In light of the uncertainty, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has chosen to take a notable action by reaching out to him for selection. Rohit has faced significant pressure after a series of disappointing performances in the recent Test matches against New Zealand and Australia, resulting in his omission from the playing XI in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The 37-year-old batsman is resolute about overcoming his difficult phase, having scored only 31 runs across three Tests versus Australia. While no official conversations have taken place so far, an MCA representative has indicated that Rohit will be contacted prior to the squad’s finalization.

“The selectors are anticipated to announce the squad on January 20, during which they will adhere to the proper protocol of verifying the availability of every player. Rohit will also be contacted around that time for selection,” stated an MCA official in a communication to PTI.

Following his return from Australia, Rohit has begun training again and recently practiced with Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane at the Wankhede Stadium. He is expected to fully recommence training soon.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently highlighted the significance of domestic cricket in nurturing players, urging all to engage in red-ball matches. “I would always want everyone to participate in domestic cricket. That is how crucial domestic cricket needs to be regarded. Not just one game. If they are available and have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should participate in domestic cricket. It’s as straightforward as that,” Gambhir remarked.

Jaiswal, Gill, and Pant to Feature in Ranji Trophy

Meanwhile, emerging players Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant have confirmed their readiness for their respective Ranji Trophy games. In spite of his impressive outings in Australia, Jaiswal has pledged to compete against Jammu and Kashmir for Mumbai. Gill, who accumulated 93 runs across five innings in Australia, will take part in Punjab’s upcoming encounter with Karnataka in Bengaluru. Rishabh Pant, recognized for his aggressive approach, will make a rare Ranji appearance for Delhi against Saurashtra. Pant has not played a Ranji Trophy match since the 2017-2018 season.
