Vignesh Puthur, a 24-year-old spinner from Kerala, made a memorable IPL debut for Mumbai Indians (MI). He took crucial wickets, dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Deepak Hooda in the high-stakes match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Mumbai introduced him as their Impact Substitute, replacing former captain Rohit Sharma in the second innings. Despite his strong bowling performance, MI suffered their 13th consecutive opening-game defeat.
Dhoni Acknowledges Vignesh’s Performance
Vignesh’s impressive spell caught the attention of legendary CSK wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The former captain walked in to bat during the penultimate over but faced only a couple of deliveries before Rachin Ravindra sealed the match with a six. After the game, Dhoni and Ravindra shook hands with MI players. At that moment, Dhoni patted Vignesh on the back, acknowledging his efforts.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri, who was commentating during the match, highlighted the moment, saying, “Pat on the shoulder for young Vignesh Puthur. I don’t think he will forget it for a long time.”
Crucial Breakthroughs for MI
Vignesh made an instant impact when he dismissed CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, breaking a crucial 67-run partnership. He continued his dominance by removing Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda in his next two overs, briefly giving MI a chance to fight back. However, the team struggled without Jasprit Bumrah’s experience and failed to capitalize on Vignesh’s breakthroughs.
MI’s Scouting Success
Mumbai Indians’ stand-in captain, Suryakumar Yadav, praised the franchise’s scouting system, which identified Vignesh as a promising talent before signing him at the auction.
“Amazing, MI is known for that – giving youngsters opportunities. The scouts do this for 10 months, and he (Vignesh) is a product of that,” Surya told the broadcasters after the match.
He also explained his strategy behind saving Vignesh’s final over for a crucial moment.
“I kept his one over in the pocket if the game went deep, but it was a no-brainer to give him the 18th over,” he added.
Although MI couldn’t secure a win, Vignesh Puthur’s debut performance proved his potential as a rising star in the tournament.
