Mohammed Shami Unlikely To Join India’s Test Squad In Australia Soon: Report

Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who recently took seven wickets in his comeback Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh after nearly a year-long injury layoff, is not expected to join the Indian Test squad in Australia anytime soon. According to a Times of India report on November 27, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) currently has no plans to send Shami for the remaining four matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shami, currently representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, has impressed with four wickets in two matches. He recorded figures of 1/46 against Punjab in the tournament opener and followed up with a 3/21 performance against Hyderabad on November 25 in Rajkot.

Despite his form, the BCCI seems satisfied with the performance of the pacers already part of the five-match Test series squad. A BCCI source confirmed, “There has been no conversation around trying to send Shami to Australia, at least for now. At the moment, the fast bowlers chosen for the tour and the first XI in the opening Test at Perth are doing their job very well.”

In the first Test, which India won by 295 runs in Perth on November 25, Indian pacers led by stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah claimed 18 wickets. Bumrah secured eight dismissals (5+3), Mohammed Siraj picked up five (2+3), while debutant Harshit Rana took four wickets across both innings. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and squad members Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna also remain options for India.
