Australia’s left-arm spinner, Matthew Kuhnemann, has been called up for suspected illegal bowling action after his team whitewashed Sri Lanka in their 2-0 series held at the Test level. Having collected the most wickets in the series (16 wickets), it’s on now that Kuhnemann is due to have an assessment of his action so the International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations can be checked.
Potential Consequences If Action is Deemed Illegal
If Matthew Kuhnemann’s bowling action is deemed illegal, he will be suspended from bowling in international cricket. He would be asked to implement any necessary changes to his bowling style before reassessment. When Kuhnemann’s action remains to be cleared, he will be debarred from playing for Australia in international matches but will still be able to play for Tasmania in domestic cricket.
Kuhnemann’s next possible outing for the international team will be in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in South Africa at Lord’s in June. Cricket Australia has indicated full backing for the 28-year-old and has highlighted the CA’s willingness to support him throughout the clearance action process.
CA Backs Matthew Kuhnemann During Investigation
Cricket Australia (CA) released a statement confirming that the team had been informed about the report after the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The Australian group was informed of the match officials’ referral after the second Test in Galle against Sri Lanka and will assist Matt with the passage of this issue”, the statement reads.
Kuhnemann, who first played professionally in 2017, has 124 matches in both formats, including 5 Test Matches as well as 4 ODIs2. He has recorded 25 scalps in five Test matches since making his debut in 2023. Quite astonishingly, this is the first time his bowling technique has been brought under scrutiny after eight years in the professional (bowling) circuit.
No Comment Until Resolution of the Issue
The statement from Cricket Australia further stated that the organization would work closely with the ICC and independent experts to ensure compliance with the ICC’s regulations. Cricket Australia will involve ICC and independent consultants by the ICC regulations. No further comment will be issued by Cricket Australia or Matthew until the issue is sorted out”, the statement read.
Kuhnemann’s bowling action has never been challenged before, and Cricket Australia will continue to be involved in helping the spin bowler as he works towards resolving this matter.
