On Day 2 of the ‘Boxing Day Test’ against Australia in Melbourne, members of the Indian cricket team were seen wearing black armbands to honor the late Dr. Manmohan Singh. This gesture came as tributes from the sporting world poured in following the passing of India’s former Prime Minister. Dr. Singh, who served as Union Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 and as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Born in Gah, Pakistan in 1932, Dr. Singh is widely acknowledged for guiding India through an economic crisis with his liberalization policies shortly after his appointment as Finance Minister in 1991. As Prime Minister, his landmark achievement was the 2008 Indo-US Nuclear Deal, along with overseeing India’s highest-ever GDP growth rate of 10.08 percent and implementing the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Act, which focused on social welfare.
Since AIIMS confirmed his passing on Thursday night, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, remembering Dr. Singh as a brilliant, hardworking leader with unwavering integrity.
Here’s how members of the sports fraternity, including legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra and cricket icons Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, paid their respects to Dr. Singh:
