Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) dominated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) with a five-wicket win in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at Uppal Stadium on Thursday. Explosive half-centuries from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, along with a strong spell from Shardul Thakur, secured the victory.
SRH batted first but struggled to maintain their recent high-scoring form. They lost wickets frequently and managed only 190/9. LSG chased the target with ease, winning with 23 balls to spare. Pooran and Marsh led the charge with powerful hitting.
Shardul Thakur’s Brilliant Spell Restricts SRH
Shardul Thakur delivered a match-winning performance for LSG. He took four wickets and helped restrict SRH to 190/9.
Thakur finished with 4/34 in four overs. He dismissed Abhishek Sharma for six runs early on. He then removed Ishan Kishan for a duck, giving LSG the upper hand. Kishan had scored a century in his last match but fell cheaply this time. SRH was struggling at 15/2.
Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy built a 61-run partnership to steady the innings. Head looked in good touch but fell for 47 to debutant Prince Yadav. Heinrich Klaasen’s attacking knock ended due to Yadav’s brilliant run-out.
Ravi Bishnoi bowled Nitish Kumar Reddy for 32. Aniket Verma added late fireworks, smashing five sixes in a 36-run blitz off just 13 balls. Digvesh Rathi dismissed him, but his knock took SRH to 156/6.
Abhinav Manohar fell cheaply for two runs as Thakur claimed his third wicket. Cummins injected late momentum by smashing three consecutive sixes off his first three balls. However, Avesh Khan dismissed him for 18 off four balls.
Thakur ended his spell by dismissing Mohammed Shami, marking his 100th IPL wicket. Every LSG bowler chipped in with a wicket, preventing SRH from posting a bigger total.
LSG’s Aggressive Batting Seals the Win
LSG had a shaky start while chasing 191 runs. Mohammed Shami dismissed opener Aiden Markram for just one run, leaving them at 4/1 in 1.3 overs. Pooran and Marsh then took control. Pooran smashed two sixes and a four off Simarjeet Singh. Marsh punished Shami, hitting 18 runs in a single over, including two sixes and a four.
LSG reached 50 runs in just 4.2 overs. Marsh struck a four through mid-on. Pooran ended Abhishek Sharma’s over with two big sixes. By the end of the powerplay, LSG was 77/1, with Pooran on 44* and Marsh on 25*.
Pooran completed his second straight IPL fifty in just 25 balls, hitting four fours and five sixes. He continued his assault in Adam Zampa’s over, smashing two sixes and a four. Marsh’s boundary took LSG past 100 in 7.3 overs.
SRH Fights Back but LSG Stays in Control
Pat Cummins broke the partnership by dismissing Pooran for 70 off 26 balls. His explosive knock included six fours and six sixes. The 116-run stand between Pooran and Marsh ended in just 43 balls. LSG was 120/2 in 8.4 overs.
At the 10-over mark, LSG stood at 129/2, with Marsh on 44* and skipper Rishabh Pant on 2*. Marsh reached his fifty in 29 balls, hitting two consecutive fours off Cummins. However, Cummins struck back, dismissing him for 52 off 31 balls. LSG was 138/3 in 10.5 overs.
LSG lost Ayush Badoni (6) and Rishabh Pant (15) in quick succession. They slipped to 164/5 in 14.1 overs, giving SRH a glimmer of hope. Abdul Samad, playing against his former team, stepped up. He played a quick cameo and sealed LSG’s victory. LSG finished at 193/5 in 16.1 overs. Samad remained unbeaten on 22 off eight balls, hitting two fours and two sixes. David Miller contributed 13* off seven balls, with two boundaries.
