International Olympic Committee approves eight candidates for membership in the IOC

The 141st IOC Session meeting in Mumbai elected eight new IOC Members during its proceedings on Tuesday, four women and four men for election as IOC Members by the upcoming Session. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Mumbai elected eight new members, including four men and four women, on the third and final day of its session.

“The 141st IOC Session meeting in Mumbai, India, today elected eight new IOC Members, four women and four men, bringing the proportion of women on the IOC membership to 41.1 per cent. This is in keeping with the IOC’s ambition to lead by example and increase female representation in governance structures,” the IOC said in a statement.

After being voted in as a member at a ceremony in Mumbai, Oscar-winning Hollywood actress Michelle Yeoh (Bond Girl) was also elected to the IOC as a Member. Eight new members were suggested to the Olympic Committee during its meeting in Mumbai, and she was one of them. Yael Arad of Israel was chosen by the Session to join the membership after a vote. The first Israeli to ever win an Olympic medal was retired judoka Arad, who won a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. She became the first woman to hold this position when she was named President of the National Olympic Committee of Israel in November 2021. Balazs Furjes, a Hungarian sports administrator, was also chosen to join the IOC.
