Mumbai City FC secured a convincing 3-0 victory against Mohammedan SC in the Indian Super League 2024-25 on Sunday. The match, held at the Mumbai Football Arena, helped Mumbai City FC climb to fifth place with 27 points from 17 matches.
The Islanders dominated possession, holding 69.3%, and scored from all three shots on target. Their aggressive approach kept Mohammedan SC under constant pressure throughout the match.
First Half: Promising Start but No Goals
To begin with, Mumbai City FC launched their attacks with intensity. Bipin Singh played a key role in their offensive moves. Early on, Vikram Partap Singh sent a precise pass to Bipin in the box. However, Bipin’s shot flew over the goal.
Shortly afterward, Lallianzuala Chhangte displayed quick dribbling through the middle and set up another opportunity for Bipin. This time, Bipin aimed for the bottom left corner, but Mohammedan SC goalkeeper Padam Chhetri made a sharp save to deny him.
Meanwhile, Mohammedan SC responded with a counterattack. Franca led a fast break, receiving a pass from Vanlalzuidika Chhakchhuak outside the box. However, Franca’s shot went wide, keeping the score level.
As the first half progressed, Mumbai City FC continued to create chances. In the 29th minute, Tiri headed the ball toward Thaer Krouma, who attempted a powerful shot. Unfortunately for Mumbai City FC, the effort went too high. Despite their dominance, the first half ended goalless.
Second Half: Breaking the Deadlock
As the second half began, Mumbai City FC maintained their high tempo. In the 46th minute, Chhangte sprinted down the right flank and controlled a pass brilliantly. He fired a quick shot, but the ball struck the woodwork, narrowly missing the target.
Finally, in the 72nd minute, the breakthrough came. Bipin Singh launched a long ball from the left wing. Mohammedan SC’s Gaurav Bora, attempting to clear it, accidentally headed the ball into his own net. This mistake handed Mumbai City FC a crucial 1-0 lead.
Subsequently, things got worse for Bora. In the 78th minute, Jon Toral sent a pass to Chhangte, who was positioned on the right flank. Chhangte’s shot deflected off Bora and landed in the goal, doubling Mumbai City FC’s advantage.
Sealing the Win
Toward the end, Mumbai City FC continued to dominate. In the 85th minute, Chhangte created another opportunity with a powerful cross into the box. Mohammedan SC’s defense failed to clear the ball, and it deflected to Krouma. Without hesitation, Krouma struck the ball into the net, securing a 3-0 win for the Islanders.
Chhangte’s Star Performance
Lallianzuala Chhangte delivered an outstanding performance. He completed 26 of his 32 passes, created two goal-scoring opportunities, made one tackle, delivered six crosses, and scored once. His pace and creativity played a significant role in Mumbai City FC’s victory.
