Indian Super League 2024-25: FC Goa Defeat East Bengal FC 1-0, Boost Playoff Hopes

FC Goa claimed a narrow 1-0 win over East Bengal FC in the Indian Super League 2024-25 on Sunday. The match, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, saw the Gaurs move to second place on the points table. With 30 points from 16 matches, this marked their eighth victory of the season. Brison Fernandes’ decisive goal, his sixth of the campaign, sealed the win. Although East Bengal took six shots on target compared to FC Goa’s three, the hosts managed to hold firm.

Early Exchanges and Goa’s Breakthrough

At the start, East Bengal showed attacking intent. In the third minute, Lal Chungnunga delivered a sharp pass to Vishnu Puthiya outside the box. However, Vishnu’s shot missed the target. Shortly afterward, FC Goa responded with an aggressive move. Odei Onaindia attempted a left-footed strike, but the defense intercepted it.

Eventually, FC Goa capitalized on their pressure. In the 13th minute, Borja Herrera curled a precise cross from the right flank. Brison Fernandes met it with a perfect header, sending the ball into the net. This early goal gave the Gaurs a vital advantage.

Missed Opportunities in the First Half

Meanwhile, East Bengal sought an equalizer. In the 20th minute, Richard Celis attempted a long-range shot, but it went too high. Similarly, Jeakson Singh came close in the 37th minute with a powerful strike from outside the box. Unfortunately for East Bengal, the ball missed the top corner by a whisker.

Second Half Momentum Shifts

As the second half began, FC Goa substituted Ayush Dev Chhetri for Sahil Tavora. However, East Bengal took control early on. In the 52nd minute, Richard Celis received a promising pass from Vishnu Puthiya near the six-yard box. Although his shot seemed destined for the goal, the defense managed to block it.

To increase their attacking intensity, East Bengal brought on David Lalhlansanga for Cleiton Silva. Despite this, FC Goa’s defense, led by Hrithik Tiwari, held strong. Notably, in the 67th minute, Richard Celis attempted two well-directed shots within a quick sequence. Yet again, Tiwari made crucial saves to deny him.

Late Drama and Goa’s Resilience

In the final minutes, East Bengal continued to push. In the 88th minute, Lal Chungnunga launched a long-range shot from over 35 yards. Impressively, the ball was on target, but Tiwari stood firm and made a confident save. With that, FC Goa maintained their slender lead until the final whistle.

Brison Fernandes Stands Out

Throughout the game, Brison Fernandes showcased his all-around abilities. He completed 13 of his 18 attempted passes, created three goal-scoring chances, and made four tackles. Most importantly, his goal secured all three points for FC Goa.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, FC Goa will face Chennaiyin FC on January 25. Meanwhile, East Bengal will take on Kerala Blasters FC on January 24. Both teams will aim to deliver stronger performances in their upcoming matches.
