Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who experienced back spasms, is anticipated to be rested for the majority of India’s upcoming home white-ball series against England, with the emphasis on the ICC Champions Trophy commencing February 19. Bumrah, who was India’s standout player with 32 wickets during their 1-3 defeat to Australia in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was unable to bowl in the final innings due to back spasms. The 30-year-old had delivered over 150 overs throughout the series.
The injury is attributed to Bumrah’s substantial workload, and the BCCI medical team will strive to have him ready for the ICC event, where his participation is vital for India’s success.
Sources acquainted with the situation have indicated that the seriousness of Bumrah’s back spasm has not yet been assessed.
India will start their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai.
If Bumrah’s injury is classified as a Grade 1, he will require a minimum of two to three weeks of rehabilitation prior to being able to return to play. A Grade 2 injury might take up to six weeks, whereas a Grade 3 injury, the most serious, would necessitate at least three months of rest and rehabilitation.
It had been anticipated that Bumrah would not engage in T20I bilateral series as it’s not a World Cup year, but with the Champions Trophy on the horizon, he might have participated in two or three ODIs against England, considering it’s a 50-over format.
Currently, the severity of Bumrah’s injury will determine whether he competes in the England series, or at least the final match at his home ground in Ahmedabad on February 12, to evaluate his fitness.
India will face England in five T20Is and three ODIs starting January 22.
