ICC Women’s T20 World Cup: Pakistan Captain Fatima Sana To Leave Tournament Following Father’s Passing

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana is set to return to Karachi following the passing of her father on Thursday, October 10. As a result, she is expected to miss Pakistan’s crucial Women’s T20 World Cup group match against Australia on the same day at the Dubai International Stadium. In her absence, wicketkeeper-batter Muneeba Ali Siddiqui will take over as captain.

Muneeba may also continue to lead Pakistan in their next fixture against New Zealand on Monday, October 14, if Fatima does not rejoin the squad before then. Expressing his condolences, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi shared his sorrow following the news of Fatima’s father’s passing.

Fatima’s departure is a significant setback for Pakistan’s World Cup campaign, especially as the team remains in contention for a semi-final spot. She has been a key performer, boasting a strike-rate of 153.57, and is the only batter from Pakistan to score at such a high rate, amassing 43 runs at an average of 21.50.

With Fatima sidelined, Pakistan’s pace attack faces further depletion, particularly after the injury to pacer Diana Baig, who missed the India clash. Fatima has been a standout bowler, sharing the top spot for most wickets in the tournament for Pakistan with left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal. She also holds the distinction of being the third youngest captain in the Women’s T20 World Cup, behind Meg Lanning and Stafanie Taylor.

Pakistan, currently second in Group A with two points, began their campaign with a win against Sri Lanka but lost to India by six wickets in their second match. Despite Fatima’s quick 13 runs and two wickets, Pakistan fell short in the contest.
