ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023: ₹11,637 Crore Economic Boost and 48,000 Jobs Created

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 significantly boosted India’s economy, generating ₹11,637 crore (approximately $1.39 billion) and creating 48,000 jobs, according to a report by Financial Express citing ICC data.

Held from October 5 to November 19 across ten cities, the tournament drew 1.25 million spectators, contributing $861.4 million in tourism revenue. The cities that hosted the matches included Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune, benefiting sectors like hospitality, travel, and FMCG.

The impact on the economy was notable, with secondary spending by visitors totaling $515.7 million, making up around 37% of the total economic effect. International attendees spent about $281.2 million exploring other tourist destinations and typically stayed five nights, while domestic travelers stayed for two.

The report also highlighted that nearly 68% of international visitors would recommend India as a tourist destination, and 59% expressed interest in returning. Additionally, the World Cup generated $70.7 million in media exposure for businesses and stakeholders.

Overall, the event created over 48,000 full-time and part-time jobs, primarily in the hospitality sector, contributing $18 million to the economy.
