Daren Sammy Named West Indies All-Format Coach Starting 2025

Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy has been appointed as the head coach of the team across all formats, following his earlier role as Test head coach, announced by Cricket West Indies (CWI). The news was confirmed by CWI Director Miles Bascombe during the Quarterly Press Conference in St. Vincent on Monday.

Sammy, who led the West Indies to two ICC Men’s T20 World Cup victories, has served as head coach of the white-ball teams since May 2023. Starting in April next year, he will also take charge of the Test team, succeeding Andre Coley after the conclusion of the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Currently, the West Indies sit at the bottom of the WTC25 standings with a point percentage of 24.24 and are out of the running for the final at Lord’s next year. They still have a two-match series against Pakistan scheduled between January 16-28, 2025.

Speaking about his new role, Sammy expressed his enthusiasm. “It is an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and with the new role he has mapped out the new direction,” he said at the press conference, as quoted by the ICC. He added, “I am really excited about the added responsibility and the new journey, one that I think myself and my team will be prepared for.”

As a player, Sammy represented the West Indies in 38 Tests, scoring 1,323 runs at an average of 21.68, including one century and five fifties, and claimed 84 wickets. In 126 ODIs, he amassed 1,871 runs at an average of 24.94 with nine fifties and a top score of 89, along with 81 wickets at an average of 47.54. In T20Is, he played 68 matches, scoring 587 runs at an average of 17.26 with a strike rate of 147.48 and a top score of 42*, while taking 44 wickets at an average of 25.36 with best figures of 5/26.
