Bumrah Surpasses Kapil Dev with 5-Wicket Haul in Brisbane Test

Jasprit Bumrah has been on a stellar run in international cricket in 2024. Notably, he surpassed legendary pacer Kapil Dev in two key bowling stats, further cementing his reputation as India’s premier fast bowler in overseas conditions.

Bumrah’s Five-Wicket Performance

On day two of the third Test against Australia in Brisbane, Bumrah stood out as India’s leading bowler. He claimed 5 wickets for 72 runs in 25 overs, maintaining an economy rate of 2.90. He removed key batsmen, including Steve Smith, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, and Mitchell Marsh, showcasing his skill and consistency.

Bumrah Breaks Kapil Dev’s Record

This five-wicket haul marked Bumrah’s 10th outside Asia, surpassing Kapil Dev’s tally of nine. Bumrah has claimed three five-wicket hauls in Australia, three in South Africa, and two each in the West Indies and England. In comparison, Kapil took five five-wicket hauls in Australia, and two each in England and the West Indies.

Bumrah Leads in SENA Conditions

Furthermore, Bumrah now holds eight five-wicket hauls in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia), surpassing Kapil’s seven. This milestone further emphasizes Bumrah’s dominance in challenging overseas conditions.

Bumrah Ties with Pat Cummins in World Test Championship

With his recent performance, Bumrah now ties with Australian captain Pat Cummins for the third-most five-wicket hauls in ICC World Test Championship history, each having nine. Only Nathan Lyon and Ravichandran Ashwin have more, further solidifying Bumrah’s place among the greats.

Bumrah Dominates 2024 Cricket

This year, Bumrah has been the top wicket-taker in international cricket, with 73 wickets in 20 matches at an impressive average of 13.78. Additionally, he has taken four five-wicket hauls, all in Tests. In fact, with 58 wickets in just 12 Tests, he has outperformed every other bowler in 2024, maintaining an average of 15.20.

India’s Day Two Performance

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, India made early breakthroughs. They quickly dismissed Khawaja, McSweeney, and Labuschagne, reducing Australia to 75/3. However, a resilient 241-run partnership between Smith (101) and Head (152) put India on the back foot. Once Bumrah broke the stand, Australia recovered, ending the day at 405/7. Carey (45*) and Starc (7*) remained unbeaten.

Bumrah’s exceptional performance not only surpasses historical records but also reinforces his status as one of the best pacers in the world.
