Jasprit Bumrah has officially been ruled out of India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The BCCI confirmed this decision late on Tuesday. After a long wait regarding his fitness, it was confirmed that the 31-year-old pace spearhead will miss the tournament. Consequently, Harshit Rana, 23, has been named as Bumrah’s replacement in the final squad.
Replacement for Bumrah
The BCCI explained, “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement.”
Bumrah’s Injury and Recovery
Bumrah initially suffered a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and was advised to rest for five weeks. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, he has not fully recovered in time for the tournament.
Harshit Rana’s ODI Debut
Harshit Rana made his ODI debut during the series against England. In just two games, he picked up four wickets. Now, he will take Bumrah’s place in the squad for the Champions Trophy.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Out, Varun Chakaravarthy In
In another key change, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the final squad. Instead, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has been named as his replacement. Chakaravarthy secured his spot after an outstanding performance in the T20I series against England, where he claimed 14 wickets in five matches and was awarded the ‘Player of the Series.’
Jaiswal’s Ongoing Contributions
Although Jaiswal was India’s top run-scorer across formats in 2024, he has only played one ODI so far. Most of his runs came from Test cricket, leading to his exclusion from the final squad.
Non-Traveling Substitutes Named
Additionally, India has named three non-traveling substitutes in case of injuries: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Shivam Dube. These players will be on standby and travel to Dubai if needed.
