BCCI introduces 10-Point Plan for Team India: Key Focus on Team Culture and More

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced new regulations for the Indian cricket team following disappointing results in recent games, including a historic 0-3 defeat to New Zealand and a 1-3 loss against Australia, marking a departure from a decade of dominance. Despite widespread demands for Rohit Sharma’s removal as captain and calls to exclude him and Virat Kohli from the Test team, the BCCI has opted not to implement drastic measures against them or coach Gautam Gambhir at this time. Nevertheless, the BCCI has put forth several crucial restrictions aimed at addressing issues within the team.

Here are the key points from the BCCI’s 10-point directive:

1. Stronger Team Culture

One of the significant priorities of the BCCI is enhancing team dynamics. The recent tour of Australia revealed a fractured team spirit, with players remaining divided outside of official hours. To combat this, the BCCI has mandated that players must travel collectively with the team rather than separately with their families. This rule intends to fortify team bonding and discourage the trend of star players traveling independently, as exhibited by Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Additionally, players are required to attend the entire duration of practice sessions and refrain from leaving early.

2. Limiting Family Time

The BCCI has restricted the amount of time family members can be with players during international tours. For tours exceeding 45 days, players may have their partners and children (under 18) accompany them for a maximum of two weeks, with costs covered for shared accommodations. The policy aims to balance the players’ personal well-being with their team obligations.

3. Ban on Personal Staff

The presence of personal staff members, including managers and chefs, has been limited. The BCCI’s statement noted that “Personal staff (e. g. , personal managers, chefs, assistants, and security) are to be restricted on tours or series unless explicitly approved by the BCCI. ” This decision has been made to ensure that the team can concentrate on its goals and avoid logistical complications arising from personal staff involvement.

4. Serious Approach to Domestic Cricket

The BCCI has now mandated that players, including seniors, must participate in domestic matches to remain eligible for selection and central contracts. This includes competing in tournaments such as the esteemed Ranji Trophy and the Duleep Trophy. Exceptions to this rule will only be granted in exceptional circumstances. The BCCI highlighted that this policy will uphold players’ fitness and their connection to the domestic cricket ecosystem, aiding talent development and providing emerging cricketers opportunities to compete with senior players.

5. Commitment to BCCI Events

Players will also be required to take part in BCCI events and photo shoots, making themselves available as necessary. This policy aims to ensure players are aligned with the board’s broader vision, both on and off the field.

The BCCI’s newly implemented policies aim to foster a more disciplined and cohesive environment within the Indian cricket team, with a focus on team culture, commitment, and performance in both domestic and international settings.
