Why Can’t We Find Aliens? The NASA Theory on Why Aliens Ignore Us (Humans Might Not be Interesting to Them)

A NASA scientist proposes that we haven't found aliens because most civilizations, including ours, possess similarly limited technology, making mutual detection nearly impossible.

For decades, scientists have scanned the cosmos, asking one of humanity’s biggest questions: are we alone? The math seems to suggest we shouldn’t be. The universe is deafeningly silent, though. A NASA scientist has put up a novel, surprisingly straightforward answer for this discrepancy, which is known as the Fermi Paradox. The reason we haven’t found aliens, and they haven’t found us, might be because we are all, technologically speaking, just too ordinary.

What is the Fermi Paradox?

The mystery begins with a compelling statistical argument. The Drake Equation, a famous formula, suggests a high probability that several intelligent civilizations exist relatively near Earth. It calculates that many should be capable of contacting us. However, despite our best efforts, we have found no evidence—no signals, no visits, no giant cosmic constructions. This glaring absence of proof, despite the high probability, is the core of the Fermi Paradox. It forces scientists to ask, “Where is everybody?”

What is the “Mundanity” Explanation?

Dr. Robin Corbet, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, offers a theory he calls “mundanity.” In his paper, “A Less Terrifying Universe? Mundanity as an Explanation for the Fermi Paradox,” he proposes a simple idea. The Milky Way likely hosts a decent number of extraterrestrial civilizations. The problem is that their level of technological advancement is probably on a scale very similar to our own. Their technology is limited, just like ours, which is why neither civilization can detect the other. We are all, essentially, whispering into a vast cosmic ocean without powerful enough megaphones.

Why Wouldn’t They Contact Us?

Dr. Corbet presents two key reasons for the silence. First, he suggests that these civilizations may simply lack the overwhelming technology we often imagine. He writes that “none have achieved technology levels sufficient to accomplish large-scale astro-engineering or lack the desire to do so.” If a highly advanced civilization were out there, it would likely be sending out powerful, unmistakable beacons. Since we don’t see these, most civilizations are likely just as limited as we are.

Second, a major obstacle is the difficulty of interplanetary communication. It takes a tremendous amount of energy to send high-power beacons or probes. Furthermore, the wait time for a response could be millions or even billions of years. Faced with these astronomical hurdles, most civilizations may have simply given up on the search for others. It is a task that their technology and resources simply do not permit.

Is Earth Safe From an Alien Invasion?

This theory leads to a surprisingly comforting conclusion. Dr. Corbet suggests that Earth would hold little appeal for other civilizations. He describes our planet as “not likely to be a very interesting place to visit.” This lack of interest, or even cosmic boredom, means we are not likely to face an alien attack. A civilization advanced enough to reach us would likely see no value in it. As Corbet states, this also means no civilization is likely colonizing the galaxy, even with robotic probes. The universe is not a threat; it is simply indifferent.
