US, Ukraine Sign Landmark 10-Year Defense Pact To Counter Russian Aggression

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy forged a significant bilateral agreement aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression. Signed on Thursday, the 10-year security treaty also aims to pave the way for Ukraine’s eventual NATO membership.

President Biden emphasized the commitment of democracies to deliver substantial support, announcing a collective agreement among G7 economies to mobilize an additional $50 billion in aid for Ukraine. This aid will be sourced from frozen Russian assets, underscoring the international community’s united front against Russian actions in Ukraine.

During a joint press conference with Zelenskyy, Biden conveyed a stern message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting, “You cannot wait us out. You cannot divide us.” The agreement includes provisions for immediate consultations between top US and Ukrainian officials in response to any armed threat against Ukraine, highlighting the strategic defense collaboration outlined in the treaty.

Zelenskyy hailed the agreement as historic, emphasizing its role in fortifying Ukraine’s defense capabilities and advancing its path towards NATO membership. The pact also includes initiatives to bolster Kyiv’s defense industry and expand its military capabilities, reinforcing Ukraine’s sovereignty and security in the face of ongoing geopolitical challenges.

The G7’s commitment to Ukraine was further underscored by an outline provisional deal to utilize profits from frozen Russian assets to secure a $50 billion loan for Ukraine. This financial support aims to mitigate economic pressures and strengthen Ukraine’s resilience against external threats, with multiple lenders sharing the risk under a structured loan syndicate.

Jake Sullivan, US National Security Adviser, emphasized the strategic imperative of leveraging frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure timely disbursement of funds ahead of the upcoming US presidential elections. This initiative aims to secure the aid package against potential policy shifts in future administrations, ensuring sustained support for Ukraine’s security and stability.

Overall, the bilateral security agreement and financial commitments underscored at the G7 Summit reflect a unified stance among Western democracies in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and resilience amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
