Taipei Refutes Beijing’s Claim Of Sovereignty Over Taiwan

Taiwan has strongly criticized China’s enduring ‘One China’ principle, asserting that Beijing has never governed Taipei at any point, as reported by Taiwan News.

At the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, Taipei countered assertions from the Chinese delegation that the majority of the global community supports the “one China” principle. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) reaffirmed that Taiwan is a “sovereign and independent country” and is “not subordinate to China.”

“It is a well-known fact and an internationally recognized reality that China has never governed Taiwan for a single day,” it stated.

Additionally, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Taiwan is a modern democratic nation that upholds its democratic system and respects human rights and the rule of law, as reported by Taiwan News.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry strongly criticized China, stating that Beijing’s unilateral spreading of false statements “undermines stability” in the Taiwan Strait and “endangers international peace, stability, and order.”

Taipei also called on the international community not to trust China’s “malicious rhetoric.” Taiwan reiterated its commitment to oppose China’s verbal and military intimidation, emphasizing its collaboration with other democracies to counter authoritarian expansion and uphold peace in the Taiwan Strait, as reported by Taiwan News.

China, officially the People’s Republic of China, regards Taiwan, a self-governed territory, as part of its sovereign territory and maintains the stance of “one China.”

China has escalated its military operations around Taiwan in recent years, frequently entering Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) with military aircraft and deploying naval vessels near its maritime boundaries, as reported by CNN. Following former US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 2022 visit to Taipei, China has notably increased the frequency of military aircraft flights over Taiwan. Over time, Beijing has consistently stated its intention to reunify Taiwan with China.
