The Sindhi Foundation, headquartered in Washington, DC, has appealed to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for assistance in locating Priya Kumari, a young Sindhi Hindu girl who has been missing for three years. Sufi Munawar Laghari, the foundation’s executive director, made this plea from Geneva, stating that the UNHRC’s intervention is urgently needed to rescue Priya Kumari and investigate the ongoing issue of abduction and forced conversions of Sindhi girls and women. Laghari highlighted concerns that powerful figures in Sindh, reportedly supported by the Pakistani army, are behind these illegal activities.
The situation has sparked widespread alarm within the Sindhi community, prompting the Sindhi Foundation to plan a demonstration on July 8th in Geneva. This demonstration aims to raise awareness about Priya Kumari’s case and the broader issue of forced conversions in Sindh. The event will be held near the Broken Chair sculpture outside the UNHRC building. Additionally, Laghari intends to present a memorandum to the UNHRC chair, detailing the atrocities faced by Sindhis in Sindh and urging international action.
Laghari called upon individuals and human rights organizations worldwide to join in solidarity with Priya Kumari, her family, and other abducted Sindhi daughters. He emphasized the need for collective pressure on Pakistan to end these forced conversions and ensure the safe return of Priya Kumari and others affected by similar circumstances.
