Rana Sanaullah: ‘Pak Govt Will Certainly Try To Keep Imran Khan Behind Bars As Long As Possible’

Pakistan PM’s Adviser on Political and Public Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, has acknowledged reports suggesting that the government plans to file new cases against imprisoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to prolong his incarceration, citing concerns over his alleged agenda to destabilize the nation and sow chaos, as reported by Geo News.

Speaking on Geo News’ program ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’, Sanaullah stated, “Imran Khan’s primary agenda is to destabilize the country and create an atmosphere of chaos and anarchy, which is why the government intends to keep him in custody for as long as possible.”

Responding to queries about delaying Imran Khan’s release despite court rulings in his favor, Sanaullah highlighted that Imran Khan had boycotted parliament and led protests following his government’s removal via a no-confidence motion in 2022. He emphasized the government’s commitment to using all legal avenues, including new charges, to delay Imran Khan’s release.

Sanaullah clarified, “We will not detain Imran Khan against his will; all actions will be in accordance with the Constitution and the law.” He underscored that PTI, like the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), received a public mandate in general elections, suggesting Imran Khan’s alleged violations of this mandate through violent protests and attacks on judicial institutions.

The adviser called on Imran Khan to engage in democratic dialogue with political rivals, asserting that PML-N harbors no personal animosity towards him. He noted Imran Khan’s reluctance towards political dialogue and democratic processes, as per Geo News.

Sanaullah’s comments coincide with Imran Khan’s ongoing detention since August last year, stemming from convictions in cases such as Toshakhana, with additional charges ranging from corruption to terrorism following his ousting as Prime Minister through parliamentary measures in April 2022. Despite recent acquittals in certain cases, Imran Khan remains in custody due to outstanding legal issues, including the Iddat case.
