Khalistan Separatist Pannun ‘Murder’ Plot: US Says India looking At ‘Institutional Reforms’

In a significant development, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell highlighted ongoing discussions with India regarding potential institutional reforms in response to allegations surrounding an attempted assassination plot. The plot allegedly targeted Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

During an online press briefing, Campbell underscored the US’s stance on seeking accountability, noting constructive dialogue with Indian officials following his recent visit with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Campbell emphasized, “We have consistently asked for updates and raised this issue directly with the Indian government at the highest levels of leadership.”

Regarding the nature of the alleged plot, Campbell refrained from attributing involvement to rogue agents or unauthorized actions by higher levels of the Indian government. Instead, he indicated that both countries are engaged in discussions about potential institutional reforms in response to the allegations and reports.

The developments come in the wake of Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national accused in the plot against Pannun, being extradited from the Czech Republic to the US on June 14. Gupta pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Manhattan, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation.

The Indian inquiry committee, established to probe these allegations, is expected to shed light on the extent of any institutional changes deemed necessary in response to the incident.

As the situation evolves, both the US and India continue to navigate this sensitive issue through diplomatic channels, emphasizing transparency and accountability in their discussions.
