Society and Living

Human Beings Versus Being Human

Humans are distinct in nature and character, from other living beings. What differentiates them are certain characteristics like wisdom, courage, empathy, being just and fair, ability to self-control and moderation, and consciousness.
Many ancient and modern day philosophers have suggested certain virtues and attributes which make humans, human. When we talk of virtue of consciousness, this includes a person’s heightened awareness towards its surroundings and sensitivity to human values. This is a virtue that really helps us to co-exist not only with fellow humans but also with other species and flora and fauna in the environment.
As soon as a human children start gaining the senses, concept of ownership – what is mine and what is yours begins to get etched or drilled in their minds. But in the process what we forget to teach them is to appreciate or take care of what is yours or mine. How many of us acknowledge and notice the beauty in our surrounding which could be in the form of plants, flowers, trees, landscapes, paintings, artefacts etc.
Appreciating beauty around is such a humane activity which very few humans practice. Other day I saw these three women in the middle of Delhi clicking pictures of Flower beds on roads and feeling really happy like children.
They were making videos and clicking pictures of flowers of each and every colour. I couldn’t stop myself from approaching them and enquiring if they were working on some special project or something. And I loved what they told me- they said these flowers are looking so beautiful and they will exist for another 4-6 weeks and then they will be gone forever.
So why shouldn’t we enjoy their beauty and contribution these are making to our city. Looking at colourful flowers in full bloom definitely was a feast for eyes. But looking at people stopping by to appreciate and acknowledge that beauty was delightful experience and sight.
I think this is what we lose while growing up from a child to an adult, we just be a human being and stop being human. Lets live and enjoy the simple pleasures in life which are free of cost but expriences can be priceless.
