The expansion of Rajasthan’s largest SMS hospital emergency department is underway to accommodate patients with various emergency conditions, extending beyond accident cases. Due to the increasing number of emergency cases, the need for expanding the emergency facilities has been acknowledged for some time. Collaboratively, the SMS Medical College Principal, Superintendent, and their team have formulated a plan, and the blueprint for the expansion is now ready. The enhanced emergency facilities will be equipped with advanced technology, beds, and necessary medical apparatus. This expansion project, funded entirely through CSR funds, is estimated to cost around Rs 12.50 crore.
Dr. Achal Sharma, Superintendent of SMS Hospital, stated that a two-story building will be constructed, providing approximately 34 beds and high-dependency units. This new structure will be interconnected with the existing emergency facilities, enabling seamless patient transfers in case of critical conditions.
Dr Rakesh Jain, Additional Principal and Emergency Incharge, outlined that the ground floor of the emergency department will house a triage area with red, yellow, and green zones. The red zone will cater to highly critical patients, the yellow zone for less severe cases, and the green zone for normal cases. The ground floor will also include ultrasonography, biomedical, and record rooms. The first floor will be dedicated to less serious cases, accommodating around 25 beds.
Dr. Rajeev Bagrahatta, Principal of SMS Medical College, and Dr. Rakesh Jain emphasized that the expansion plan for the emergency department has been devised, and work will commence soon. Additionally, the new Cordio wing will be seamlessly connected to the expanded emergency facilities, providing immediate treatment for critically ill patients.
