Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled the country and sought asylum in India, with her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy confirming on Wednesday that she will be staying in the national capital for “a while.” This announcement quashed rumors about her potential departure for London.

In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Joy clarified, “These are all rumours. She has not made a decision on that yet. She is going to stay in Delhi for a little while. My sister is with her. So she is not alone.”

When asked about his own political aspirations, Joy responded, “There is no such plan right now. This is the third time a coup d’état was staged against our family.” He noted that all  family members of Sheikh Hasina, except for her, were already living abroad and had established their own lives there. He also mentioned that there was no likelihood of Sheikh Rehana or any other family member entering politics.

Earlier, Joy had told BBC that his mother would not be returning to politics, expressing his disappointment: “So disappointed that after all her hard work, for a minority to rise up against her.”

Sheikh Hasina’s departure followed violent protests against preferential quotas in government jobs, which resulted in over 300 deaths.

Meanwhile, an interim government is set to take oath on Thursday at 8 PM, with Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus expected to be the chief.
