Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Medanta hospital in Gurugram to pay tribute to Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh. Shah was one of the first politicians to reach Medanta where the SP patriarch breathed his last on Monday.

Shah paid tribute to the veteran politician with a garland on his mortal remains; he expressed condolences to Mulayam’s family members. “Mulayam Singh Yadav ji remained active in politics for decades with his unique political skills. During the Emergency, he raised his voice for the restoration of democracy. He will always be remembered as a grassroots leader. His death marks the end of an era in Indian politics,” Shah tweeted in Hindi.

Mulayam’s condition had been “quite critical” for the past few weeks and the Samajwadi Party patriarch was on life-saving drugs.

Confirming the news of his father’s demise, Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, “Mere adarniya pitaji aur sabke netaji nahi rahe – Akhilesh Yadav.”

Mulayam Singh passed away on Monday after a long illness. He was admitted in the Medanta hospital on 22 August. He was in the ICU for a week.
