The incident occurred near both residential areas and under-construction buildings, leaving onlookers shocked and sharing the footage widely.
Russia’s state-owned conglomerate, Gazprom, provided a different explanation, stating that a section of a new gas pipeline was being cleared out as part of standard procedures and that the situation is under control. Despite this, the spectacle of the sewage eruption continued to circulate on social media, creating a stir and attracting international attention.
The unusual scene even caught the attention of former Ukrainian interior minister advisor Anton Gerashchenko, who posted about it on X (formerly Twitter). In his post, he described the event as a “sh*t show,” drawing sarcastic attention to the situation. Gerashchenko’s post included clips of the sewage fountain, intensifying social media interest.
This sewage eruption in Moscow brings to mind a recent incident in China, where a sewage pipeline burst during a pressure test. The massive explosion, dubbed the “poop volcano,” covered cars, pedestrians, and motorcyclists in Nanning, China, when a septic tank pipe burst unexpectedly. Despite both incidents going viral, authorities have reported no injuries, though nearby vehicles and areas suffered damage.
With such explosive events occurring within weeks of each other, the term “poop fountain” has been widely circulated online. Both incidents highlight the occasional challenges of urban infrastructure and the viral reach of unusual, if unfortunate, public spectacles.
