OpenAI May Launch ChatGPT-Powered Social Network Amid Altman–Musk Feud

In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI is reportedly developing an internal prototype for a new social media network—one that could rival Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s AI-driven platforms.

According to The Verge, several insiders revealed that the potential app would be centered around ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities, marking a bold expansion into the world of user-generated content and social interaction.

While still in the early stages, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is said to be quietly seeking feedback on the idea, though it’s not yet clear whether the platform will be a standalone app or integrated within ChatGPT itself.

Altman vs Musk: The Battle Continues

This possible move adds fuel to the ongoing feud between Altman and Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but stepped down in 2018. The clash has escalated significantly over the past year.

In February 2025, a group of Musk-aligned investors made a $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI—an offer that Altman flatly rejected.

Later, Musk filed a lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI, accusing them of straying from the company’s nonprofit roots and turning it into a profit-seeking entity by creating OpenAI Global LLC, the for-profit wing of the organization.

This week, OpenAI struck back with a countersuit, alleging Musk engaged in “unlawful and unfair business practices” meant to disrupt OpenAI’s operations in favor of his competing AI company, xAI.

Will OpenAI Compete with X, Meta, and Others?

Altman previously teased the idea of a social platform. In response to a report about Meta working on an AI-driven social app, Altman replied in February, “Okay, maybe we’ll do a social app.”

Now, it seems that idea may be coming to life.

If OpenAI does go public with the platform, it would face stiff competition not only from Musk’s X and Meta’s AI services, but potentially from startups backed by other tech billionaires as the AI arms race intensifies.

What Makes This App Different?

Unlike traditional platforms, this rumored OpenAI social network would reportedly focus on AI-powered creativity, particularly using ChatGPT’s image generation features, potentially giving users the ability to share AI-generated artwork, memes, avatars, and more in a community-driven space.

This could redefine social interaction in the AI age, blending content creation with powerful tools users already love in ChatGPT.

What’s Next?

While OpenAI has not officially confirmed the development, the report suggests that the firm is seriously considering a new social experience built on AI, even as legal drama and corporate competition swirl around it.

With the April 28 elections, legal showdowns, and tech rivalries all heating up, OpenAI’s rumored entry into social media could be the next big disruption in an already chaotic digital landscape.
